The Penn-Pitt Series
The Quakers and the Panthers are meeting for the 14th time in history, with Penn leading the series 7-6. These two teams met last year at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, with the Panthers gaining an 82-58 victory. Gibbs scored 12 points to lead a balanced Pitt attack, while Miles Cartwright led all scorers with 22 points. Last year's meeting was the first between the teams since the 1975-76 season. To find the last time Pitt played at The Palestra, you have to go all the way back to Feb. 28, 1964, a 71-59 Penn win.
Playing out of the Big East Conference, the Panthers began the season ranked in the Top 10 in most polls, but took a tumble after losing at home last week to Long Beach State. On Tuesday night, as part of the Philly Hoop Group Classic, Pitt defeated La Salle, 73-69. Guard Ashton Gibbs is a consensus preseason All-America, and so far he has lived up to the hype averaging 19.8 points per game. Tray Woodall is not far behind, at 17.8 ppg, and also has a team-high 34 assists while Nasir Robinson -- who hails from nearby Chester -- is averaging 16.5 ppg. Lamar Patterson leads Pitt in rebounding (6.0 rpg).
The Penn-JMU Series
The Quakers and Dukes are meeting for the first time in history in men's basketball. This is the third time in four games that Penn is playing an opponent for the first time (previously Robert Morris and Wagner).
