"Darren and Zack have earned the respect of their teammates throughout the preseason with their team-first approach," said Miller. "I have total confidence that they will provide us with strong leadership both on and off the court this season, and I look forward to working closely with them!"
That the team voted Smith to the position shows the level of respect they have for him -- the senior has not seen the court for two years after fracturing his kneecap in the 2007-08 season opener against Drexel. As a freshman in 2006-07, Smith played in 27 games and made 10 starts for the Quakers' Ivy League championship squad. He averaged 4.1 points and had a pair of 17-point games.
Rosen was the 2008-09 Philadelphia Big 5 Rookie of the Year last season, dishing off 139 assists which led the Ivy League and was the eighth-best total in Penn's program history. Rosen also led the Ivy League in assist/turnover ratio, was second in free-throw percentage, and third in steals per game. In starting 27 of 28 games his freshman season, Rosen led Penn with 31.1 minutes per game, averaging 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest. He had 13 double-figure scoring outings.
Penn, which is in the midst of preseason practices, will open the 2009-10 season on Friday, Nov. 13 at Penn State. The Quakers' home opener will be Saturday, Nov. 21 against Delaware.
