PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team started off its Big 5 season with a 16-point win over La Salle on November 25. Wednesday night, the Quakers look to move to 2-0 in Big 5 play as they host Temple at The Palestra.
GAME 9 – PENN (4-4) vs. TEMPLE (3-4)
Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015 * 7 p.m.
The Palestra (Philadelphia)
The Series with Temple
*The Owls lead the series, 45-19, and have won eight in a row. In fact, the last time Penn won in this series was the first time Temple head coach Fran Dunphy returned to The Palestra to face the program he oversaw for 17 years, back in the 2006-07 season.
*The last four meetings have all been decided by single digits, including a 76-67 decision last year at Temple’s Liacouras Center. The last matchup here at The Palestra was the 2013-14 season opener for both teams, with the Owls gaining a 78-73 victory.
Donahue vs. Dunphy
*Wednesday’s game represents the latest matchup between Penn’s first-year head coach, Steve Donahue, and Fran Dunphy. It is well-documented that Coach Donahue spent 10 years on Coach Dunphy’s staff here at Penn, helping the Quakers to six Ivy League championships during that tenure. (Penn also won Ivy titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03, primarily with players recruited during Donahue’s tenure on the Quakers’ staff.)
*This is the 14th time these two have matched wits on the sidelines. Coach Dunphy was a perfect 12-0 vs. Coach Donahue when he was at Penn and Donahue was at Cornell, but Coach Donahue finally got his win at an opportune time—the 2010 NCAA Tournament first round, when the Big Red beat Coach Dunphy’s Temple squad 78-65 en route to a Sweet 16 run.
*Through eight games, Penn has a 1.15 assist/turnover ratio (113/98); Last year, the Quakers’ assist/turnover ratio was 0.78.
*Penn is averaging 12.2 turnovers per game; last year, the Quakers averaged 15.0 turnovers per game.
*Penn has taken as many or more foul shots than its opponent in six of eight games so far this season, and is averaging 4.4 more free throws per game (Penn 153, opponents 118).
*Senior Darien Nelson-Henry has scored in double figures in all but one game this season; he had eight last Wednesday vs. Navy.
*Nelson-Henry has three double-doubles this season (vs. Central Connecticut State and La Salle, at George Mason) and finished one rebound shy of a double-double two other times (Robert Morris, at Lafayette).
*Sophomore Sam Jones has 32 field goals this season; 25 of them have been three-pointers. 65 of his 75 field-goal attempts are from beyond the arc.
*In the last three games, sophomore Antonio Woods has scored six first-half points and 37 second-half points (0/17 at Lafayette, 3/13 vs. Navy, 3/7 at George Mason); for the season, he has 20 first-half points and 65 second-half points.
*Woods has scored in double figures in each of the last three games (14.3 ppg during that stretch).
