Men's Crews Find Success on Day One of IRA's

CAMDEN, N.J. -Three of Penn's crews that raced Thursday have made it through to Friday's semifinals and another has a chance to make it to the finals as the first day of racing at the IRA Regatta has wrapped up. All four are still in the running for Grand Final spots.

The Quaker varsity 8 won its repechage to advance to the top semifinal after finishing fourth in its morning heat. Penn won the repechage in 5:48.76, four seconds up on Oregon State.The Quakers were third in their morning heatin 5:53.86. They will take part in the semifinals starting at noon Friday. The top three finishers will go toSaturday's Grand Final.

The freshman 8 boat,coming offits Eastern Sprints victory two weeks ago, cruised past Wisconsin by more than two seconds to win its heat and advance to Friday's semifinals. The Quakers were first in a time of 5:54.7, with the Badgers behind in 5:56.89. Penn's freshmenalso beat out Boston University, Navy, Syracuse and Dartmouth. The Quaker freshmenwill take part in the first semifinal Friday at 1 p.m. along with Cal, Northeastern, Princeton, Georgetown and Cornell. The top three finishers advance to the Grand Final.

The varsity 4+ will compete in the semis after winning a thrilling repechage Thursday afternoon. In a four-boat race that had the top three finishers come in within 1.07 seconds of each other, the Quakers (6:33.27) held on to edge Oregon State (6:33.95)by seven-tenths of a second.Theboat took second place in its morning heat, crossing the line in 6:42.25 but falling to Gonzaga by nine seconds. Penn will compete in the second semifinal Friday at 2 p.m. with Cal, Wisconsin, Colgate, Washington State and Hobart. The top three finishers will advance to the Grand Final.

The lightweights started their IRA campaign with the open 4+, and the Quakers took third in their heat in 6:49.44. Penn finished behind a dominant Cal (6:29.17) and Harvard (6:45.35) but beat Princeton "B" and Michigan. The open 4+ crew will now compete in the third repechage Friday morning at 8:24a.m. to try and make Saturday's Grand Final.
