PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's cross country team got its season underway on Friday afternoon in an unscored 6K meet against La Salle at Valley Green Trail at Wissahickon Park. Freshman Thomas Awad was the top Quaker finisher, coming in with a time of 19:30.
La Salle - the reigning Atlantic 10 champion and preseason favorite to repeat in 2012 - had the top four finishers on the day, led by Alfredo Santana, who topped the field with his winning time of 19:14. A trio of Explorers followed him with times ranging from 19:18 to 19:24.
Following Awad in fifth position was John Foye and Chuck Shurtleff, who each came in at 19:31 for the Quakers. Another freshman, Brendan Smith, was eighth in 19:33. Connor Ryan rounded out the top ten at 19:34.
Freshman Brandon Clark was sixth for Penn, coming in at 19:39, while returners Victor Allen and John Trueman came in at 19:41 and 19:45, respectively. Seniors Kevin Foy (19:56), Mike Kiley (19:57), George Dickson (20:00) and freshman William Meadows (20:03) rounded out the Quakers' competitors on the day.
Penn will lace it up again next week at the Iona Meet of Champions in New York City's Van Cortlandt Park. The Quakers came in seventh in last year's event.
