Men's Cross Country Places Third at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – On Saturday morning, the University of Pennsylvania men’s cross country team competed in the Princeton Invitational at the West Windsor Fields, where they took third out of 37 teams in the Men’s 8k Championship Race and first in the Men’s 8k Open Race. Junior captain Thomas Awad finished first overall in the championship race, while freshman Chris Luciano crossed first for Penn in the open.

The Quakers totaled 139 points for the third place finish. Awad completed the course in 24 minutes flat, defeating Virginia Tech’s Stuart Robertson by a second. The second member of the Red and Blue to come across the line was sophomore Brendan Shearn, who finished in 24:38. Senior John Trueman and junior Brendan Smith finished in 35 and 39, respectively, in 24:57. Sophomore Lyle Wistar rounded out the top five runners for Penn in 45th place in 25:12.

In the Men’s Open, Luciano took third place while sophomore Chris Hatler was right behind for fourth overall in 25:21. Juniors Clark Shurtleff and William Meadows also finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh place with a time of 25:22. Freshman Thomas Connelly was the fifth Quaker to score for the team, finishing 12th in 25:52.

The Red and Blue will head back to Princeton’s West Windsor Fields in two weeks for Heps on Nov. 1.
