Philadelphia, Pa. - The Penn men's fencing team opened the season over the weekend at the 25th Annual Temple Invitational. Eight fencers finished in the top ten in the three weapons, including two second-place finishes and one third.
In the saber, sophomore Jon Press finished tied for third with William Gardner-Mims of Harvard. He was joined in the top ten by sophomore Emil Cappetta (sixth) and sophomore Mike Haass (10th). Sophomore Dave DiPaola finished 20th in the event, followed by freshman Mike Park, who finished 24th.
In the epee, junior Michael Sanders finished second. He was defeated by Ryan Wagner of Penn State. Joining Sanders in the top ten of the event was freshman Alex Tozzo, who finished sixth.
Continuing the trend, senior Steve Gavalas finished second in the foil. He was defeated by Chris Miller of Penn State. Sophomore Michael Galligan finished fourth in theevent. Also placing were freshmen Darien Huang and Corey Purcell, who finished 25th and 26th, respectively.
The Quakers will be in action again next weekend, when they travel to State College, Pa. for the Penn State Open, Nov. 13-14.
