Cambridge, Mass. -- The University of Pennsylvania men's fencing team went 4-0 at the MIT Multi-Meet on Sunday.
The Quakers (12-1, 2-0 Ivy) narrowly defeated the University of North Carolina, 16-11 and MIT, 15-12. Penn closed out Brown, 19-8 before embarking on the most dramatic match of the day.
The Quakers defeated Brandeis, 14-13 on the last touch of the last bout. Steve Gavalas defeated his final opponent, 4-0, in the foil to win the match for the Quakers.
"It was high drama," said Head Coach Dave Micahnik. "All of the matches were close right up until the end."
So far this season, the Quakers have out-scored their opponents, 224-127.
The Penn men's fencing team is next in action Wednesday, Feb. 9 when they host Temple and Princeton in Weightman Hall at 5 p.m.
