PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s fencing team racked up a perfect 5-0 record at the Elite Invitational on Saturday at the Dave Micahnik Fencing Center. Making their home debut, the Quakers recorded wins over Johns Hopkins (24-3), Ohio State (16-11), Notre Dame (16-11), NJIT (20-7), and Air Force (24-3). OSU and the Fighting Irish both finished last season ranked in the top five in the country according to CollegeFencing360.com.
En route to an unblemished day on the strips, the epee and foil squads provided the most success for the Quakers. Both teams racked up total records of 35-10.
Senior R.J. Shipp compiled a perfect 10-0 record on epee, while sophomore John Vaiani recorded a 10-1 mark on foil. Vaiani was a perfect 3-0 against a tough OSU squad.
Justin Yoo and Zsombor Garzo were also stout on epee, combining to go 19-5.
Ira Schlosberg put together an undefeated record (7-0) on foil, including a 3-0 run against the Fighting Irish. Freshman Aaron Ahn registered a 4-2 record in the first home action of his career.
On sabre, it was senior Shaul Gordon leading the way with a 10-3 record. Raphael Van Hoffelen followed with an 8-2 mark of his own.
The Quakers will be back in action after the Thanksgiving holiday, when they travel to the December North American Cup in Baltimore, Md. on December 4-7.
