Providence, R.I. -- The University of Pennsylvania men's fencing team finishedsecond overall at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association tournament, held at Brown on Saturday. Combined with the women's third-place finish, the Red and Blue took second overall in the tournament. Harvard won the men's and women's titles as well as the combined title.
In the team rounds, the Quakers won the men's foil. They notched 26 wins in the weapon on the day.Stephen Gavalas hadseven wins, Michael Galligan collected nine victories and Ron Berkowskywon10 boutsin the Penn victory. The men'ssabre squad finished in third place with 20 victories and the men'sepee finished eighth with 13 wins.
Individually, Berkowsky won gold in the foil, defeating Cory Werk of Yale, 15-12. Teammate Gavalas finished ninth in the weapon. Zachary Yeates finished fifth in the sabre competition and Noah Rohrer was the Quakers top finisher in the epee, ending up in seventh place.
"I'm estatic," said Head Coach Dave Micahnik. "They came through like a true team today. People did their jobs tremendously. I am very delighted with everyones performance."
The Quakers are next in action at the NCAA Regional Championships, held at Drew University in Madison, N.J.on Saturday, March 5.
