Men's Fencing Jousts with Five Teams at PSU Invite

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The new year started with highs and lows at the PSU Invitational for the University of Pennsylvania men’s fencing team. After beginning the day with a win, the Quakers dropped the next two duals to UNC and PSU. They finished the day 3-2 and are now 4-2 overall.

Ranked No. 8, the Red and Blue began the day’s bouts with No. 10 Duke. Penn defeated the Blue Devils in each weapon and won the dual, 18-9.

Next was UNC, but the Quakers found themselves in a rut and struggled to come back. North Carolina defeated the Red and Blue in Epee (6-3) and then in Foil (5-4). Penn won Sabre (5-4) but it wasn’t enough and the Quakers suffered a 15-12 loss to the Tarheels.

Defending NCAA men’s fencing team champion Penn State is again ranked at the top of the list. The Nittany Lions took victories of each weapon and defeated the Quakers by 19 points.

Despite the two losses, the Red and Blue bounced back to take a perfect dual over Drew, 27-0, and then took the last dual of the day over Haverford, 17-10.

Next up for the Quakers is the North American Cup at Virginia Beach. Bouts will take place starting Friday up to Monday.
