Men's Fencing Wins Three in Season Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Pennsylvania men’s fencing team went a 3-2 in the Philadelphia Invitational Multi-Meet. Penn defeated Drew (17-10), Duke (15-12) and Johns Hopkins (17-10) and lost to Rutgers (11-16) and North Carolina (13-14). Sophomore All-America Ron Berkowsky highlighted the day for the Quakers going a perfect 15-0 in his season debut.

In the Red and Blue’s victories over Drew and Johns Hopkins, Matthew Kolasa, Michael Galligan and Berkowsky combined for nine wins in each bout. Alex Tozzo and Ben Wieder solidified the epee against Hopkins winning two bouts each. Wieder would out do his effort against Duke by going 3-0 and giving Penn the 15-12 victory.

The Quakers loss to North Carolina marked the first loss to the Tar Heels in the program’s history. Despite winning the foil and the epee the Red and Blue could only muster to victories in the sabre.

Penn will travel to University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Jan. 28 to take part in the Penn State Invitational.
