BETHANY BEACH, Del. - The Penn men's golf team had a strong second round Friday and heads into Saturday's final round with a five-shot lead over Yale at the George Washington Invitational. The 54-hole event is being played at the par-72 Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club.
The Quakers shot 293 in Friday's first round, but came back with a 284 in the second round for a 577 on the day. Yale is second at 582, while host GW is third (295-289--584). They are the only teams out of the nine in the field below 600 for the day; Holy Cross (304-297--601) is fourth.
Individually, junior Scotty Williams -- last year's Ivy League Championships medalist who missed the fall as he studied abroad -- is atop the leader board after carding a second-round 67 to follow up a 73. That puts him at 140, four under par.
Freshman Max Marsico is tied for fifth after carding 75-68--143, putting him at 1-under. P.J. Fielding shot 72-74--146 and is tied for eighth, while Colin St. Maxens carded 73-75--148 and is tied for 11th overall. The fifth player in Penn's lineup, Dillon Hakes, enters Saturday's final round alone in 21st place after shooting 75-78--153.
Three Penn players are in the field as individuals. Two of them, Philip Winter and Kevin Huntington, are among a few golfers tied for 16th overall at 151 -- Winter shot 80-71, while Huntington shot 72-79. The third individual, Geoff Locher, carded 77-81--158 and is tied for 27th. Overall, the field features 51 golfers.
