Men's Golf Fifth After Day 1 at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team is in fifth place after one day at the Navy Spring Invitational. The 36-hole tournament will conclude with a final round tomorrow on the par-71 US Naval Academy Golf Course.

Penn shot 14-over-par 298 as a team on Saturday and is just four shots out of the lead. Host Navy has three teams in the 21-team field; the Midshipmen's "blue" team is tied with Virginia at 294. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest are tied for third, at 296. LIU-Brooklyn sits behind Penn, at 300, with George Washington at 301.

Individually for Penn, junior Max Marsico shot a 1-over-par 72 on Saturday; he is tied with Virginia'sDavid Pastorefor fifth place in a field of 105 golfers. Colin St. Maxens (74) and Austin Powell (75) are also in the top 20, tied for 14th and 16th, respectively.

A newcomer to the lineup, senior Geoff Locher, shot a 77 on Saturday and is tied for 43rd overall. Ben Cooley carded an 80 and is tied for 72nd.

Evan Beck (Wake Forest) and Mac McLaughlin (Virginia) are tied for the lead after Saturday's first round after shooting 1-under-par 70. Scott Vincent (Virginia Tech) and Zeke Shaffer (Navy) are tied for third, ahead of Marsico and Pastore, at even-par 71.
