Men's Golf Finishes 12th at Braveheart Classic

BEAUMONT, Calif. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team placed 12th out of 20 teams at the Braveheart Classic, hosted Monday and Tuesday at the Oak Glen Golf Course by UC Riverside.

The Quakers shot a three-round total of 297-297-313=907 to finish at 43-over par as a team. They were 42 strokes off the pace set by tournament champion UCLA, while blew away the rest of the field with three solid rounds. Cal Poly and Santa Clara tied for second place, a distant 19 strokes behind the Bruins.

Sean Barrett was Penn's top golfer for the tournament. The junior carded 74-75-74=223 on the par-72 course to finish 7-over par and tie for 26th overall. He was followed closely by Dean Merrill (77-70-77=224), who tied for 29th. Derek Rogers (72-77-79=228) tied for 48th,Michael Blodgett (74-78-83=235) tied for 75th, and Nick Ryder (77-75-84=236) tied for 80th.

Garrett Wentzell (83-81-80=244) tied for 97th and Michael Kornheiser (89-89-85=263) finished 106thto round out the Quakers participants.

UCLA's Chris Heintz won medalist honors, carding a 7-under par 69-70-70=209 to down the field by five strokes. His teammate Lucas Lee and Jacksonville's Russel Knox tied for second at 214.

Penn is next in action at the George Washington Invitational, which will take place March 25-26 at Bethany Beach, Del.
