BEAUMONT, Calif. - The Penn men's golf team finished 16th out of 17 teams at the Braveheart Classic,a three-round tournament thatwas hosted by the University of California-Riverside and played Monday and Tuesday at the Oak Valley Golf Club.
The Quakers, playing their first event of the spring season, carded a three-round 334-326-310--970 to finish well ahead of Idaho State (990). Jacksonville University stormed to the team title, carding 312-295-289--896 to overcome a second-round deficit to UCLA (308-297-300--905).
Sean Barrett was Penn's top finisher, as the Quakers' top four players all finished within a few strokes of each other. The senior captain shot 83-82-76--241 to tie for 61st overall. Michael Blodgett was right behind him, tying for 65th overall with an 83-85-74--242. Blodgett's final-round 74, which was2-over par,was the best round by a Penn player in the tournament.
Freshman Chance Pipitone tied for 69th and was just one stroke behind Blodgett at 83-79-81--243, while Dean Merrill finished justtwo strokes behind Pipitone with an 85-80-80--245.
Brett Rendina and Nick Ryder were among a group tied for 84th overall; Rendinacarded 85-87-80--252, while Ryder shot 90-79-83--252. Patrick Cooper also competed for the Quakers,and finished at 94-83-88--265.
Jacksonville went 1-2-3 in claiming the championship. Matt Kleinrock won medalist honors by three strokes, carding 78-73-69--220 to finish ahead of teammates Russel Knox (77-75-71--223) and Duncan Stewart (77-72-75--224).
