ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Penn men's golf team rebounded from Friday's first round at the Navy Invitational, lowering its team score by 11 strokes Saturday to finish fifth out of 15 teams.
All five golfers who competed for the Quakers lowered their score from the first day to the second day, and three players -- Dean Merrill (71), Michael Blodgett (72) and Sean Barrett (72) -- posted a better Saturday score than the tournament medalist, Navy's Erich Schoen (73), on the par-71 USNA Golf Course.
Navy had two teams in the tournament, a Gold team and a Blue team, and the Gold team took the team championship with a two-round score of 289-293--582. Rider was second, three strokes behind, and Loyola (Md.) was third just one stroke behind Rider. George Washington (290-300--590) was fourth, three strokes ahead of Penn (302-291--593). The Quakers posted the second-best team score Saturday, one stroke behind Loyola's 291.
Blodgett, a freshman,was the Quakers' top finisher for the tournament, carding a 72-72--144 (his best two-round score this year) to finish just 2-over par and tied for sixth overall. Merrill was one stroke behind him (74-71--145) and tied for eighth overall, while Barrett recovered from a first-round 77 to shoot his 72 Saturday and finish tied for 22nd overall with a two-round 149.
Nick Ryder (79-76--155) tied for 58th and Bill McCrossan (89-81--170)finished 83rd overall to round out Penn's competitors at the event. Schoen took medalist honors with his two-round, 3-under par 139; he heldon to defeat Loyola's Michael Mulieu by a stroke after his first-round 66 gave him a three-stroke lead heading into Saturday.
This was the Quakers' final event before next weekend's Ivy League Championships, which will take place Friday through Sunday atCrystal Springs Resortin Hamburg, N.J.
