CAMBRIDGE, Md. - The Penn men's golf team finished second out of 13 teams at its season-opening event, the University of Maryland Intercollegiate. The tournament ran Monday and Tuesday on the par-71, 6,801-yard River Marsh Golf Club.
The Quakers shot 280-278-282--840 over the 54-hole event, finishing behind only champion Winthrop (277-267-285--829). Georgetown was third, with a team score of 844, while Old Dominion was fourth (850) and Loyola (Md.) was fifth (853). The host Terrapins placed sixth (855).
Individually, Max Marsico picked up where he left off from a strong summer of play. The sophomore shot three sub-70 rounds, including a 68 on Tuesday which tied him for low individual score of the day. As a result, Marsico tied with three others -- Georgetown's Brian Dorfman, as well as Taylor Dickson and Damon Postal from Winthrop -- for medalist honors with a three-round score of 206. (No playoff took place, and all four were declared quad-champions.)
Senior Scotty Williams tied for 12th overall, he carded a first-round 67 Monday before going 73 and 71 to finish at 211. Dillon Hakes sandwiched a 68 between a first-round 73 and Tuesday's 72 to finish at 213, which is the same score as teammate Colin St. Maxens (72-70-71). They were two of the three golfers who tied for 16th overall with a 213 score. The fifth player in Penn's lineup, P.J. Fielding, scored for the Quakers in both of Monday's round and shot 72-71-75--218to tie for 32nd overall.
Three Penn players took part in the tournament as individuals. Freshman Austin Powell shot 73-71-73--214 and finished 31st, freshman Ben Cooley carded 75-71-74--220 and tied for 38th, and Geoff Locher shot 77-73-71--221 and tied for 41st. Overall, 75 golfers competed in the event.
Penn returns to action on Monday, Sept. 26, as the Quakers host the Rehoboth Beach (Del.) Fall Invitational, a 36-hole event.
