Men's Golf Ninth After Day 1 at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team is tied for ninth place at the Navy Invitational following Friday's first-round action. The Quakers are tied with Bucknell; both teams shot 302 on the par-71 USNA Course. Action continues Saturday.

Navy, which is fielding two teams in the event, holds the lead with its Gold team. That team shot 289, just one over par, and leads George Washington by a stroke. Villanova is also tight in the hunt at 294.

For Penn, freshman Michael Blodgett is the first-round leader; he is tied for seventh overall after shooting a 1-over par 72. Dean Merrill is tied for 18th after carding a 74, Sean Barrett is tied for 54th after a first-round 77, and Nick Ryder is tied for 67th after carding a 79. Bill McCrossan is tied for 84th after a first-round 89.

Erich Schoen, representing the Navy Gold team, is in first after firing a 5-under par 66. He leads Juan Pablo Zuluaga of GW by three strokes.
