Men's Golf Plays at Caves Valley This Weekend

PHILADELPHIA - With one week left before the Ivy League Championships at Baltusrol, the Penn men's golf team will face several of its Ancient Eight brethren this Saturday and Sunday at the Caves Valley Intercollegiate. The 36-hole event will be held at the par-72 Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md. and features eight teams, six of which are Ivies (Brown, Cornell, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Yale). Temple and George Washington round out the field.

Penn will put out a lineup of senior Chance Pipitone and Bryant Williams, junior Ross Merrill, sophomore Scotty Williams, and freshman Colin St. Maxens. Pipitone and St. Maxens both had top-10 finishes last weekend at the Princeton Invitational, another Ivy-heavy event, while the younger Williams was in the top 20.

Penn's best players seem to be hitting their form at the right time. Pipitone and St. Maxens have not shot above a 73 in the last two tournaments (five rounds), and Merrill tied his collegiate low with a 71 in the final round last week at Princeton. A year ago at this event, Scotty Williams finished third overall.

"I am looking forward to another Ivy League preview this weekend," said head coach Scott Allen. "The teams that I consider the favorites for the Ivy title will be there. It's a small field.

"I am expecting us to be in the mix for a win," he continued. "It's a wonderful event at a terrific golf course that has hosted the NCAA Men's Championship, NCAA Women's Championship and the USGA Senior Open."
