Men's Golf Readies For Temple Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team continues the fall portion of its season this weekend, competing in the Temple Invitational this Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will be played at Philmont Country Club, a course that plays at par-70 and measures 6,670 yards.

This tournament was called the Big 5 Invitational in a previous life, and along with the Quakers and the host Owls this weekend’s event will include local programs La Salle and Saint Joseph’s. Several Ivy teams are in the 17-team field -- Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard and Princeton -- as are Binghamton, Cincinnati, Fordham, Hartford, Rhode Island, Richmond, Seton Hall and St. John’s. The teams are scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m., and a final 18 on Sunday.

Penn’s lineup remains the same as last weekend at Yale with juniors Ben Cooley and Austin Powell; sophomore Patrick O'Leary; and freshmen Matt Kern and Dane Walton. All but O’Leary have been in the lineup for all three tournaments this fall (O’Leary played the Patriot Intercollegiate as an individual).

“This weekend should prove to be our toughest test of the fall season due to the difficulty of the course at Philmont Country Club and the expected dismal weather,” said Penn’s head coach, Bob Heintz. “In fact, the weather has forced us to retreat indoors in the days leading up to the Temple Invitational, giving us a great excuse to try out our recently opened indoor facility! The men and women of our programs are extremely excited to take advantage of our Trackman technology and indoor putting green when the weather acts up.

“As for the event itself, we are going with the same lineup as last week. We had some highlights, but overall it was not our strongest performance. We will need to putt better as a team if we want to contend this weekend. Considering the expected bad weather, course management, limiting the damage when we make mistakes, and strong putting will be our main points of focus. We would like to put together a solid week leading up to the highly anticipated Ivy League Match Play event the following week.”
