PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s golf team tees off the spring portion of its 2014-15 season this Saturday and Sunday at the Mission Inn Spectacular. This 54-hole event will take place at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., about a half-hour outside of Orlando.
Penn and 16 other teams will play on the Resort’s par-72 El Campeon Course which was built in 1917; the course plays at 6,884 yards. In addition to the Quakers and fellow Ivy League program Columbia, the field includes host George Mason, Campbell, Richmond, VCU, Florida A&M, Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Grand Canyon, Lehigh, North Carolina State, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, and IPFW.
Penn’s lineup will be anchored by seniors Austin Powell and Ben Cooley and also include classmate Tomas Agrest, junior Patrick O'Leary, and freshman Amay Poria. Three other members of the team will play the event as individuals (Matt Kern, Sam Rosenberg, Colin Wang).
“The Mission Inn event is a great opportunity to wrap up our spring break trip with a competitive event,” said Penn’s head coach, Bob Heintz. “With teams including defending Ivy champion Columbia, N.C. State, VCU and Virginia Tech, we will be tested by quality opponents and a difficult golf course.
“The guys have had six days at Orange County National Resort to get acclimated to the Florida sunshine and prepare for this tournament,” he continued. “While our expectations are tempered since this is the first tournament of the spring, we have worked hard this off-season to be prepared to play well. I believe we will see some strong rounds of golf, but inevitably some rust may still show through this early in the season.”
