KITTY HAWK, N.C. - The Penn men's golf team used a stellar second day to finish in third place out of 14 teams at the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate, held Monday and Tuesday at the par-70 SeaScape Golf Course. The event closed the fall portion of Penn's 2009-10 schedule.
The Quakers shot 305-284--589 over the two days,and missedshootingTuesday's bestteamroundby a stroke asboth George Mason and Radford shot 283. Host Old Dominion won the team title, carding 298-286--584, while George Washington was second with 300-288--588. Mason was three strokes behind Penn and finished fourth. The Quakers were the only Ivy League team in the field.
"This tournament was a great way for us to end the fall," said head coach Scott Allen. "We definitely go into the offseason on a high note."
Individually, senior Chance Pipitone led Penn by carding a pair of 73s to finish at 146 which placed him in a tie for ninth overall. Sophomore Dillon Hakes tied for 15th, shooting a pair of 74s for a two-round 148.
Penn's other three players showed grit, recoveringfromtough rounds on Monday tomuch better scores on Tuesday. Freshman Colin St. Maxens cut seven strokes from Day 1 to Day 2 and tied for 19th (78-71--149). Senior Bryant Williamsshot Penn's highest roundMonday, an 81, but came back to shoot the Quakers'best overall round of the tournament on Tuesday, a 69 that allowed him to tie for 22nd. Junior Ross Merrill also recovered from the first round to the second, shaving nine strokes and tying for 27th overall (80-71--151).
ODU's Eric Onesi was the individual champion; he carded 69-67--136 to defeat Hartford's Nick MacDonald by two strokes.
