SHELTER HARBOR, R.I. - The Penn men's golf team concluded the fall portion of its season this weekend at the inaugural The Classic at Shelter Harbor, a 36-hole tournament hosted by the University of Rhode Island.
The Quakers shot 302-296--598 and took third in the 16-team field. Penn was just one shot behind second-place Harvard (300-297--597). Columbia easily took the team title (299-289--588). The Lions, Crimson and Quakers were the only teams to break 600. Among other Ivies in the field, Dartmouth tied for fifth with a team score of 603; Princeton tied for eighth (605); Cornell was alone in 10th (613); Yale tied for 11th (614); and Brown was 13th (616).
Individually, freshman Max Marsico continued his fine play this fall by being Penn's low scorer. He carded a pair of 74s for a two-round 148 that tied him for 11th overall. Senior Kevin Huntington also had a top-20 finish, shooting 73-77-150 and tying for 19th.
P.J. Fielding (80-72--152) and Colin St. Maxens (75-77--152) both tied for 32nd. Freshman Marco Fortades overcame a first-round 88 and had the Quakers' second-lowest round on Sunday, a 73, to finish at 161 and tie for 64th.
Hartford's Matt Smith took medalist honors, defeating Dartmouth's James Pleat in a playoff after both players finished the tournament at 1-over-par 143.
