Men's Heavyweight Crew Opens Home Race Slate

PHILADELPHIA--The Penn men’s heavyweight rowing team returns homefor its first race of the spring on the Schuylkill River. The Quakers will hostcrews from Columbia and Princeton in the annual Childs Cup.

The History
In 1879, George W. Childs, owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, presented a challenge cup for rowing competition in four-oared races to Columbia, Princeton and Penn. One of Penn’s first intercollegiate races, the Childs Cup, was won by the Quakers that year. In 1889, the Childs Cup was changed to an eight-oared event. Cornell, Navy and California have been invited to participate in the Cup race.

Last Year ...
In their second cup race of the spring, Penn came in second for the Childs Cup Varsity 8 race and placed first in the 2nd Varsity 8. Racing at Orchard Beach against Columbia and Princeton, the Tiger crew won the Varsity 8, coming in at 6:07.38. Penn fended off Columbia by three seconds, finishing at 6:18.17. Penn’s 2nd Varsity 8 finished five seconds ahead of Princeton at 6:25.29. The Tigers (6:30.08) finished 13 seconds ahead of third-place Columbia. In the final race of the day, the Penn Freshman 8 came in third at 7:00.73. Princeton won the race at 6:20.78. Columbia finished second, clocking at 6:27.21.
