PHILADELPHIA Saturday will mark the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight rowing team’s first cup race of the 2007 season. Penn travels to Boston to face Harvard and Navy in the Adams Cup sponsored by the Class of 1977.
Last weekend the varsity 8 edged George Washington on the Schuylkill River in its spring debut. The Quakers clocked a time of 5:37 in the 2K, finishing three seconds ahead of the George Washington crew. Penn also won the second varsity 8 race with a time of 5:48, and the Red and Blue’s freshman 4+ race finished second between two GW crews with a time of 7:04.
Last season on the Severn River in Annapolis, Md., Harvard took the Adams Cup, finishing at 6:08.9, followed by Navy (6:19.5) and Penn (6:20.9). The Crimson have the all-time lead in this race, taking the cup 43 times. The Quakers have won it 16 times.
