Men's Heavyweight Rowing Races for Blackwell Cup

PHILADELPHIA—The Penn men’s heavyweight crew takes to the road to challenge Yale and Columbia in the Blackwell Cup race. This year’s race will be held in New Haven, Conn.

The History ...

The Blackwell Cup is presented for annual competition among the varsity crews of Penn, Yale and Columbia in memory of George Engs Blackwell, an 1880 Columbia graduate. The Blackwell family placed the cup into competition in 1927. Penn has won the Blackwell Cup 32 times which puts it five behind Yale for the most, including wins in four the last nine years.

Last Year ...

For the second consecutive race, Penn took second place. The Varsity 8 finished second to Yale in the Blackwell Cup, hosted by the Class of 1967. The Bulldogs set the pace in the Varsity 8, coming in at 5:22.9. Penn edged Columbia by two seconds, finishing at 5:32.0. The Quakers’ 2nd Varsity 8 won for the second straight race, clocking at 5:34.1. Yale finished just behind at 5:36.3. Columbia took the Freshman 8 with a time of 5:34.1. Yale came in two seconds behind the Lions and Penn finished 22 seconds off the pace at 5:56.6. Yale’s B and A crews finished first and second, respectively, in the second Freshman 8. The Quakers came in third at 7:01.4.
