Men's Heavyweight Rowing Readies for Childs Cup

PHILADELPHIA--The Penn men's heavyweight team prepares for the Childs Cup at Princeton's Lake Carnegie, Saturday.

The History
In 1879, George W. Childs, owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Public Ledger, presented a challenge cup for rowing competition in four-oared races to Columbia, Princeton and Penn. One of Penn’s first intercollegiate races, the Childs Cup, was won by the Quakers that year. In 1889, the Childs Cup was changed to an eight-oared event. Cornell, Navy and California have been invited to participate in the Cup race.

Last Year ...

The Penn men's heavyweight rowing team finished third in the Childs Cup, Saturday, behind Princeton and Columbia. The Varsity 8 clocked a time of 6:06.9 in the crew's first race on the Schuylkill River this spring. The Freshman 8 also finished third with a time of 6:33.1 The 2nd Freshman team rowed a duel race with Princeton and finished second at 6:35.7. The Tigers and Lions also competed in a duel race with the 2nd Varsity 8s. Princeton was again victorious completing the sweep to complement its 15th consecutive Childs Cup win.
