Men's Heavyweight Rowing Travels to Cornell

PHILADELPHIA--The Quakers take to the waters of Cayuga Lake in Ithaca, N.Y. Friday to contest the Madeira Cup. It is the last cup race of the season for Penn.

The History...

The Maderia Cup was placed into competition in 1956 by Crawford Maderia, a patron of Penn rowing. It is award to the winner of the varsity heavyweight race between Penn and Cornell. The Quakers have won the cup 35 times.

Last season...

On a beautiful day, the Penn men’s heavyweight rowing team won the Madeira Cup in a race against Cornell on the Schuylkill River. For Penn, it marks the first time they have won the cup since 2001. The varsity 8 won a very tight race, crossing the finish line just over a second ahead of the Big Red. Penn came in at 5:59.0 while Cornell came in just behind at 6:00.2. Cornell took the second varsity 8 and open 4 races handily, but the Quakers’ freshman 4 was victorious. Penn beat the Big Red by 12 seconds, coming in at 7:06.
