Men's Heavyweight Rowing Travels to Eastern Sprints

PHILADELPHIA--After a two-week hiatus, the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight rowing team returns to action Sunday at the EARC Sprints in Worcester, Mass.

The History

The University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight rowing team came in ninth at the EARC Sprints. Penn raced three boats with the varsity 8 taking the best finish. The varsity 8 placed fourth in the morning heat at 5:43.739. In the Petite final, they came in third at 5:38.419. It was a close finish as Cornell (first) came in at 5:35. 740 and Boston University (second) crossed the finish line at 5:36.968. The second varsity 8 finished fourth in their heat, coming in at 5:53.592. They qualified for the Petite final, where they finished sixth at 6:05.340. Syracuse came in first, crossing the finish line at 5:50.912. The freshman 8 came in sixth in their morning heat, clocking at 6:06.616. They raced in the 3rd final in the afternoon. They came in fourth at 6:00.490, two seconds behind Holy Cross. George Washington won the race, at a time of 5:53.882.

Penn’s last top-five finish at Sprints came in 2002, when they came in fourth, clocking at 5:49.6. The Quakers’ last victory was in 1998, when they crossed the finish line in 6:05.0.

Last Time Out

The Penn men's heavyweight crew contested the Adams and Burk Cups on the Schuylkill River April 26 and 27. Harvard won the Adams Cup and swept the rest of the races while Northeastern took the Burk Cup. Saturday, Penn hosted Harvard and Navy on the Schuylkill River. Harvard won the Adams Cup in the Varsity 8 race with a time of 5:35.1 while Penn finished third with a time of 5:49.9. The 2nd Varsity 8 race saw Penn in third with a time of 6:04.1 while the Crimson paced the crews with a time of 5:42.6. In the Freshman 8 outing, Penn clocked a time of 6:12.0 while Harvard won with 5:43.7. Harvard and Navy competed in a 2nd Freshman 8 race that the Crimson won with a time of 5:58.6.

Sunday, in the Burk Cup, Penn and Northeastern took to the River for four races. In the Varsity 8, NU won the cup with a time of 5:38.6. Penn finished at 5:52.2. The 2nd Varsity 8 race had Northeastern in at 5:41.2 and Penn at 6:09.7. The Freshman 8 race saw NU cross at 5:48.2 followed by Penn at 6:08.7. Finally in the Freshman 4, Northeastern won with a time of 6:32.6 while Penn finished at 6:45.2.
