Men's Heavyweight Rowing Travels to New York for the Childs Cup this Saturday

PHILADELPHIA - This Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania men’s heavyweight rowing team competes in its second cup race of the spring against Columbia and Princeton in the Childs Cup, hosted by the Class of 1982.

The History

The Childs Cup is the oldest cup race that Penn competes in; the first race was won by Penn back in 1879. The Quakers hold the all-time series lead with 44 victories, followed by Princeton (39) and Columbia (11). Either Penn or Princeton have won this race every year dating back to 1964, with the Tigers claiming the last 12. Last year, Princeton came in first at 6:21.5, followed by Penn (6:42.5) and Columbia (6:44.8).

Last Time Out

Last Saturday in the Adams Cup the varsity 8 came in third in a time of a 6:23.4, behind Harvard (6:07.0) and Navy (6:15.3). Penn’s second varsity 8 did better, crossing the line in a dead heat with Navy in 6:23.1. Both were behind Harvard’s pace of 6:18.6. The freshman 8 came in third in 6:49.9, once again behind Harvard and Navy.
