Men's Heavyweights to Contest Cornell for Madeira Cup

PHILADELPHIA - In the final home regatta of the 2009 season, the University of Pennsylvania men's heavyweight rowing team looks to take the Madeira Bowl from Cornell on Friday on the Schuylkill River.

The Madeira Cup was placed into competition in 1956 by Crawford Madeira, a patron of Penn rowing. It is award to the winner of the varsity heavyweight race between Penn and Cornell. The Quakers have won the cup 35 times. Last season, Cornell won the cup back from the Quakers in upstate New York. However, the last time these two schools met in Philadelphia, the Quakers won the Madeira Cup in a closely contested Varsity 8 race in 2007.

The Quakers are coming off of a 14th-place finish overall among the Varsity 8 at the EARC Championships last weekend, while Cornell was fourth after competing in the Grand Final. Following the contest for the Madeira Cup, it will be a long trip for both the Quakers and Big Red as they travel across the country to Sacramento, Calif., for the 2009 IRA Championships June 4-6.

For five Penn seniors competing on Friday, it will be their last competition as members of the Red and Blue on the Schuylkill River. They will be looking to close out their home careers with their second win over Cornell in the last three years.

Be sure to log on to www.PennAthletics.com for complete results of the Madeira Cup shortly after the conclusion of the regatta.
