PHILADELPHIA For the University of Pennsylvania men’s track and field team, the 2008-09 season will be officially underway Saturday when they head to Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton New Year Invitational.
The field events begin at 11 a.m., and the track events at 12 p.m. Attending the invitational will be Monmouth, Rider, Rutgers, Penn, College of New Jersey, West Chester and the Shore Athletic Club.
Penn returns 29 letterwinners from a team that had one winner and four second-place finishers at this meet a year ago. Three legs of the Ivy League runner-up 1,600-meter relay team return in 2008-09, while all four members of the All-East distance medley relay team are back in the Red and Blue this season. Five current Quakers have already earned indoor All-Ivy honors in their careers.
This season-opening event will be the only meet for the Quakers in the month of December with the track and field season kicking into full gear in January. Penn will have its first meet in the New Year on Jan. 10 in Annapolis, Md., at the Navy Invite.
