CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – One week after using a decisive third quarter to open the 2016 season with a win, the University of Pennsylvania was victimized by its opponent’s dominant third quarter en route to a 15-10 loss Sunday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.

The Quakers (1-1) were down to the 11th-ranked Cavaliers (2-2) just 6-5 at halftime, but UVA scored the first five goals of the second half to blow out to an 11-5 lead. Penn got within 11-7 in the final seconds of the third quarter, but the Cavs scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to put to rest any hopes of a Penn comeback.

Reilly Hupfeldt, Kevin McGeary and Alex Roesner all scored two goals for Penn on Sunday, while senior Nick Doktor had a three-point day (1g, 2a) to extend his point-scoring streak to 29 games dating back to the 2014 season.

Penn fell behind 2-0 before McGeary netted his first of the day off a Doktor feed with 5:23 left in the first quarter. Roesner followed shortly after that with a man-up goal to tie the score at 2-2. Both teams scored in the final 22 seconds of the period, Connor Keating netting his third long-stick goal of the young season, to send the teams to the second quarter tied at 3-3.

All five goals in the second quarter were scored in the first seven minutes, with Hupfeldt and Joe Licciardi recording the Penn tallies.

The decisive blow came quickly in the third, as Virginia scored five unanswered goals over a span of just 4:44 to put this one away. Hupfeldt finally stopped the run, and then Doktor breathed some life into Penn with just three seconds left in the quarter. However, Virginia scored two goals just 1:06 apart early in the fourth quarter to quell the Penn rally.

Reed Junkin went the distance in goal for the Quakers, making 16 saves -- including nine in the first quarter alone -- in his first road appearance as a collegian. Virginia outshot Penn on the day, 48-35.

Penn returns to action next Saturday, hosting Penn State at noon on Franklin Field.
