PHILADELPHIA--The Penn men's lightweight crew hosted Navy to compete for the Callow Cup on the Schuylkill River Sunday and was edged in the Varsity 8 race.
Navy claimed the Callow Cup for the eighth consecutive year and broke the tie in the overall Cup wins, now leading 27-26. The Varsity 8 race saw Navy win with a time of 5:47.9 with Penn following at 5:50.7.
Penn claimed victory in the Freshman 8 race after Navy's leading boat caught an overhead crab and fell behind. Penn raced to a 5:58.0 finish with Navy 2F at 6:00.6 and Navy 1F at 6:03.8.
In the 2nd Varsity 4, Navy's "B" boat claimed the top spot with a time of 6:30.2. Navy "A" crossed the line at 6:32.5 and Penn came in at 6:49.5.
Penn warmed up with three races against Delaware's club team. The Quakers took the Varsity 8 race with a time of 5:52.8, besting Delaware's 5:58.9.
In the Freshman 8, Penn finished second at 6:60.4between two Delaware crews. The 2nd Varsity 4 saw Penn stroke a time of 6:57.1 behind Delaware's "B" and "A" teams. Click here for Penn-Delaware results.
The Red and Blue head out on the road to Ithaca, N.Y.to contest theMatthews and Leonard Cups with Cornell,April 12. Harvard will also race in Ithaca.
