Princeton, N.J. -The men's lightweight crew team had a good showing at the Princeton Chase Regatta this past weekend, competing against the largest in the history of the event.
In tough racing conditions with with headwinds gusting over 20 miles per hour, both of the Quakers first boats finished in the top-10 in the Lightweight 8+ and 4+ events.
The Penn 'A' crew of C Sean Luhks '05, 8 Tim Mahoney '06, 7 Chris Storm '07, 6 Ben Cooley '07, 5 Dave Read '05, 4 Drew Zech '07, 3 Greg Patcella '06, 2 Sebastian Paraud '07 and 1 Sean Cronin '05 raced to a fourth-place finish(14:31.7) among 35 total entries, while the Penn 'B'boat of C Colin Groshong '07, 8 Mike Seelaus '05, 7 Joe McQuaid '05, 6 Chris Mingle '05, 5 Nate Ongley '05, 4 Mike King '05, 3 Jason Brooks '05, 2 Matt Carey '07 and 1 Mike Guichon '07 finished 16th with a time of 15:41.1.
In the Lightweight 4+ competition, C Colin Groshong '07, 4 Chris Storm '07, 3 Tim Mahoney '06, 2 Dave Read '05 and 1 Ben Cooley '07 stoked the Penn 'A' boat to a seventh-place finish (16:43.2), while the Penn 'C' boat of C Zoe Reich '05, 4 Sebastian Paruad '07, 3 Sean Cronin '05, 2 Mike Seelaus '05 and 1 Mike Guichon '07 grabbed 26th (17:30.8) and the Penn 'B' crew of C Sean Luhks '05, 4 Drew Zech '07, 3 Joe McQuaid '05, 2 Matt Carey '07 and 1 Greg Patcella '06 finished 31st (17:48.0).
"One of our main performance goals for the weekend was to finish in the top four spots in total time for varsity & second varsity crews. We finished fourth with a combined time of 29:45.8, ahead of fifth-place Princeton (29:48.6) and behind third place Yale (29:36.5)," commented Coach Mike Irwin. "As our last race for the fall this was a good sign that we have the capacity to be in the upper level of the League come April & May. I know this will be a motivating result for the squad as we prepare to set goals for the offseason."
The Princeton Chase Regatta concluded the fall season for Penn Lightweight Varsity Crew. The 2005 spring season opens on April 2 at the Lev-Brett Cup held at Rutgers in New Brunswick, N.J. Lightweight Novices will compete once more in 2004, racing at the Belly of the Carnegie at Princeton on Nov. 14.
