Men's Lightweight Rowing Eighth at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. -- At the Eastern Sprints Sunday, the University of Pennsylvania men's lightweight varsity eight finished second in the petite final and eighth overall.

In the main event, the First Varsity were fourth in their heat, finishing in under six minutes for the second week in a row. The team's time of 5:58.33 bested M.I.T by nearly 10 seconds and was good enough for eighth overall among the lightweight heats.

In the Varsity 8 Petite final, the Quakers placed second to Columbia. Penn finished in a time of 6:14.05, besting both Dartmouth and M.I.T. on their way to runner-up status.

In the first race of the day for the Quakers, the Second Freshman finished third in their heat, defeating Dartmouth with a time of 6:49.37. The Third Varsity boat followed shortly thereafter with a third-place finish of their own in their heat. They finished in a time of 6:32.13, behind Navy and Cornell, but well in front of Georgetown.

Both the Second Freshman and the Third Varsity participated in the Grand Final. The Second Freshman boat was sixth with a time of 6:53.15, while Penn's Third Varsity also finished sixth, nearly matching their time from the morning race. They crossed the finish line in 6:33.85.

The First Freshman and the Second Varsity each finished fifth in their respective heats. In the novice 8 race, the Quakers timed out at 6:16.32, coming in just behind Navy's 6:12.16. In the first heat of the second varsity 8 race, Penn was just behind Dartmouth as the Quakers finished with a time of 6:28.53.

In one of the closest finished of the day, the First Freshman boat placed third in their Petite Final. The Quakers finished in 6:32.16, just 15-hundreths of a second behind Navy and seventh-tenths of a second ahead of M.I.T. Meanwhile, Columbia took the Petite title with a finish of 6:25.15. The Second Varsity improved upon their preliminary time, finishing at 6:25.77 to place third in the Petite Final.
