Men's Lightweight Rowing Set for Eastern Sprints

PHILADELPHIA --After racing MIT the first weekend of May, the University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team gets back on the water Sunday at the EARC Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The History

The University of Pennsylvania men’s lightweight rowing team raced at the EARC Sprints, where the freshman 8 had Penn’s best finish, coming in second in the Petite final. After finishing fifth in their morning heat at 6:04.645, the Quakers finished just two seconds behind Georgetown in the final, clocking at 6:00.080. The varsity 8 clocked at 5:49.988 in the morning heat, which put them in fourth. In the Petite final, Penn finished third at 5:50.759. Yale came in first (5:46.304) followed by Columbia (5:48.790). The second varsity 8 came in fifth in the morning, clocking in at 5:58.890. They qualified for the Petite final, where they finished third at 5:58.927. Penn finished just one second behind second-place Georgetown. Delaware finished first at 5:52.314. The second freshman four finished fifth in their respective final. They came in at 7:01.192. Delaware won the event, coming in at 6:42.960.

Penn’s last top-five finish came in 1993, when they finished fifth at 5:49.5. In 1992, they finished second, which was the Quakers’ best finish since they won sprints in 1976.

Last Time Out

The Penn men's lightweight rowing team raced MIT in the final home race of the season May 3. The Freshman 8 outpaced the Engineers with a time of 6:02.2. MIT was four seconds back at 6:06.8. In the Varsity 8 outing, Penn was just a second behind its opponent. MIT crossed the line at 5:48.1 with Penn behind at 5:49.0.
