PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team will add another player to its roster for the fall with the addition of Joe Swenson, a transfer from Connecticut.
Swenson, a Massapequa Park, N.Y. native, played his club soccer for New York Red Bulls Academy. Two years ago, he was ranked No. 61 by TopDrawerSoccer.com in its IMG Academy Top-150. He twice won national championships with Red Bulls, winning the U-16 crown in 2012 and adding a U-18 title in 2013.
“We are very familiar with Joe. A year ago, he was one of our top targets for our 2014 class, so we are thrilled that he has decided to join us as a transfer,” said head coach Rudy Fuller. “Joe is a proven winner that has experienced success at the highest level with his New York Red Bulls team. He is an outstanding midfield player capable of impacting a game at both ends. Joe has a winner’s mentality and a professional approach to the game. We believe he will fit right in with our team and help us compete at the highest level.”
In addition, Swenson was part of the player pool for the U-14 and U-15 Youth National Teams with invitations to the U.S. Soccer National Camps for those programs. A Region I All-Star in 2009 and 2010, Swenson played in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase Select Game in 2011.
"I'm excited about working with Coach Fuller and the team to build a strong camaraderie both on and off the field,” Swenson said. ”Rudy has already made me feel welcome in the short time I have been associated with the program. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that await me at Penn."
A midfielder, Swenson spent the 2014 season as part of a Huskies squad which went 10-6-3 and won the American Athletic Conference regular season title.
Swenson, no relation to incoming freshman Erik, will join Penn’s recruiting class which was originally ranked No. 12 by CollegeSoccerNews.com.
