PHILADELPHIA--The University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team (1-3-1) will look to add another win to their record when it takes on in-state rival Lehigh (4-1) at Rhodes Field this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
The Quakers enter the game fresh off its fourth consecutive Penn Soccer Classic title. Senior tri-captain Derek Hobson scored the match-winning goal against Hartwick and nearly scored the match-winner against Philadelphia Soccer Seven foe La Salle in the Classic. After his performance, he was named to both the Ivy League and the Philly Soccer Seven Honor Roll.
Lehigh registered a decisive 3-0 win against the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Wednesday in the Hawks’ fourth-straight victory. Lehigh is led by forward Kyle Evans; the Patriot League’s offensive player of the week after his performance against Rutgers in which he scored both goals in Lehigh’s overtime win. He also scored two goals against UMBC. On the defensive end, junior transfer Brian Lee garnered his third shutout of the season.
In 2006, the Red and Blue opened the season on the road against Lehigh, losing 2-0. Then-sophomore Jim Taranto and then-freshman Kyle Evans were the scorers for the Mountain Hawks. Current Quakers have found the Mountain Hawks net, however. In 2005, then-freshman Mike Klein scored a goal off a pass from classmate Kevin Unger. The Quakers defeated Lehigh to win the Penn Soccer Classic that year.
