PHILADELPHIA--The University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team (0-3) is set to face Hartwick and La Salle at Rhodes Field in the Penn Soccer Classic. The Red and Blue will look for its fourth consecutive title when it kicks off vs. Hartwick on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Quakers will wrap up the Classic with Philly Soccer Seven rival La Salle on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Lafayette and La Salle will kick off the Classic at 5 p.m. on Friday. Lafayette will face Hartwick at 12 pm on Sunday.
The Red and Blue enter the Classic looking to bounce back after losing both games in a bi-coastal road trip. Penn fell to No. 7 Cal in the first game, 1-0 and then to Stanford 2-0. Despite the losses, junior Ryan Porch and senior tri-captain Derek Hobson were named to the Cal Legacy Classic all-tournament team.
Junior goalkeeper Drew Healy tallied an impressive eight saves during the match up with Stanford to contribute to his total of twelve for the weekend. He was named to the Ivy League Weekly Honor Roll for his performance.
In 2006, Penn won the prestigious Mayors Cup by beating Hartwick (3-1). Then-sophomore Alex Grendi started the scoring with an unassisted goal in that game. This season Hartwick won the Cup after a 3-0 victory over Seton Hall, whom the Quakers lost to in their season opener.
Penn’s second opponent of the weekend, La Salle (1-2) comes into the game after garnering its first win of the season over Ivy League rival, Columbia. Though the Red and Blue hold a 26-3-7 all-time advantage over the Explorers, they will look to avenge last season’s 3-2 loss.
