Men's Soccer Shuts Down Columbia, 2-0

Box Score

Philadelphia – The University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to six games as the Quakers blanked Columbia, 2-0, this afternoon. Rookie Jon Blackwell netted his first collegiate goal in the win.

“We’ve gotten such great contributions off the bench this season. The guys come in and really change the game for us, and that happened again today,” Head Coach Rudy Fuller said. “We’ve had a good string of results but each one of us is still trying to get better. We look forward to the challenge of next week’s game at Dartmouth.”

The Quakers (6-2-1, 2-0-0 Ivy League) wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Maier recorded his first goal of the season at 9:52. Maier’s shot deflected off Columbia (2-7-2, 0-2-0 Ivy League) goalie Dean Arnaoutakis and trickled into the net. Penn added a second goal in the 36th minute as senior Brian Candler connected with Blackwell who struck from 20 yards out.

Sophomore keeper Daniel Cepero made six saves en route to his fifth shutout of the season. He has allowed just one goal in his last six starts.

The Quakers are back in action on Oct. 17 as they travel to Dartmouth.
