Men's Soccer To Compete at Mayor's Cup

PHILADELPHIA—The University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team travels out of state this weekend to Hartwick’s Mayor’s Cup in Oneonta, N.Y. The Quakers will take on the host Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Elmore Field. Sunday, Penn meets Marist at 1:30 p.m. to wrap up the tournament.

After just eight days in camp, Penn (0-1) started its 2006 season with a 2-0 loss to Lehigh Sept. 4. Head coach Rudy Fuller recognized the lack of practice showed, but was optimistic looking forward.

“The first game is always a challenge,” he said. “I think we were better as the game wore on. In the second half we were able to move the ball quickly and keep them on the run and create a few more chances.”

The team will have its hands full with two 2005 NCAA College Cup qualifiers. Hartwick returns all but one of its starters, but the Hawks have started the season 1-2-1 after earning their first victory Sept. 3 over Fairfield.

Sunday’s competition, Marist, returns six starters including senior Keith Detelj, who was named the 2006 MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. Still, Detelj only played in the first game of the season and is questionable to play this weekend.

The Red Foxes are 1-2 this season after two losses over the holiday weekend to Ivy League competition Yale and 12th-ranked St. John’s.
