PRINCETON, N.J. – Five individuals from the University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team are competing in the College Squash Association Individual Championships at Princeton this weekend. The three-day event runs Feb. 27-March 1, with select matches being show on the Ivy League Digital Network ($). March 1 – Day Three
Only freshman Anders Larson remained in action in the third and final day of the CSA Individual championships for Penn.
Larson played in the second round consolation semifinals Sunday morning winning 3-1 over Pierson Broadwater of Yale. Larson moved on to play Rochester’s Michelangelo Bertocchi in the consolation finals falling in a tight match, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9.
Feb. 28 – Day Two
In second day action at the CSA Individual championships, freshmen Marwan Mahmoud and Derek Hsue returned to action in consolation play in the Pool Division.
Playing in the second round consolation bracket, Mahmoud won his first match of the day Saturday, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8, over Trinity’s Karan Malik. In the consolation semifinals Mahmoud retired against the Bantams’ Rick Penders in the third game, with the score tied one game apiece. In first round consolation bracket play, Hsue dropped his match to St. Lawrence’s Ahmed Bayoumy, 11-3, 11-5, 15-13.
With retiring from the match, and the defeat, Mahmoud and Hsue’s CSA individual championships concluded.
In Molloy Division action, junior Augie Frank lost his match on Saturday, 3-1, to Joseph Roberts of Yale. In consolation action freshman James Watson lost his match against Michelangelo Bertocchi 3-0, ending his tournament. His fellow classmate Anders Larson won his two matches of the day, both in five games, becoming the only Quaker to advance to the final day of the championships.
Larson will play in the Molloy second round consolation semifinals on Sunday beginning at 9:50 a.m.
Feb. 27 – Day One
Freshmen Marwan Mahmoud, Derek Hsue, and Hayes Murphy all ended day one of the CSA Individual championships top-flight PoolDivisionin the consolation bracket for Penn.
Mahmoud won his first match in the chase for the Pool Trophy, defeating Drexel’s Luke Willemse 12-10, 11-6, 11-7. In the second round, he was tripped up by David Ryan from Harvard, falling in straight games. Mahmoud will now play in the second round consolation bracket, with his first match on Saturday beginning at 1:10 p.m.
Hsue was defeated in round one by St. Lawrence’s Edgar Zayas 3-0; falling 11-9, 11-8, 11-6. In the consolation bracket he defeated Princeton’s Tyler Osborne, advancing to the first round consolation quarterfinals, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Facing top-ranked individual Ahmed Abdel Khalek from Bates, Murphy fell in straight games in the opening round. He then was defeated, 3-1, in the consolation round by St. Lawrence’s Ahmed Bayoumy.
In Molloy Cup action, junior Augie Frank, and freshmen Anders Larson and James Watson all won their first matches of the day. Frank would go on to win his second match also, while Larson and Watson were defeated.
