Men's Squash drops Hoehn Cup Final to Western Ontario, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After two consecutive victories to get the team in the finals of the Hoehn Cup for the second year in a row, Penn could not finish the deal, losing 7-2 against the pre-tournament favorites Western Ontario. The Quakers will finish the season right where they have been ranked all along at number 10. Trevor McGuinness and Justin Ang picked up the two victories on the day for Penn.

McGuinness picked up a 3-1 victory at number six. He jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after allowing just 12 points in the first two games. He would then drop the third game in a tiebreaker before reversing the tiebreaker score from the previous game to take the match in the fourth game.

Ang also picked up the 3-1 win with his victory coming at number nine. Ang started out the first game picking up a crucial tiebreak win 15-13. His opponent would then knot the score at one game each with his 11-6 victory in the second. Ang would recover and go on to take the next two games in tight 11-9 and 11-8 finals.

Thomas Mattsson was up 2-1 after three games in the number one position, but could not close with a victory before he fell in five games. Four Quakers would earn a game in their matches before falling in the fourth game. Included in those four were the three seniors who were playing their final team competition for Penn.

James Clark found himself in the early 2-0 hole before he rebounded to take the third game 11-9. However, he would get no closer and lose the match in four. Porter Drake got the early 1-0 lead but surrendered three straight games at number four. William Browne followed a similar pattern to Clark, dropping the first two, before winning the third 9-11. Browne would then lose the fourth 11-5 to close the match.

All that remains on Penn's schedule is the Individual Championships which will take place next weekend. The individual tournament will begin on Friday, March 4 and continue through Sunday. Both the men and women will be competing in their respective championships this weekend.
