Hoehn Cup – Day 1 Update

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Penn men’s squash team (4-11, 1-6 Ivy) fell to No. 13 Western Ontario (17-3) on Friday afternoon, 8-1, in an opening round Hoehn Cup match. The Quakers will meet No. 16 Brown (8-10, 1-6) at 9 a.m. on Saturday in New Haven, Conn. in the consolation semifinals.

The Red and Blue now trail the Mustangs, 12-3, in the all-time series. Penn’s lone victory came at the first position from senior captain Danny Greenberg (4-11, 0-7), who defeated Albert Shoihet in the full five games. The Quakers also battled to three other close losses at positions three, six and nine, where John Dudzik (3-12, 1-6), Michael Mutscheller (1-11, 0-4) and Justin Ang (4-4, 3-2) all lost in the full five games, respectively.

Penn will meet the Bears in the consolation semifinals on Saturday, the only Ivy League team the Quakers defeated this season. The two teams met earlier this month in Providence, R.I. on Feb. 2. The Red and Blue defeated Brown, 6-3, behind wins at Nos. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Penn leads the all-time series, 26-1, but hasn’t met Brown in a Hoehn Cup match since Feb. 25, 2000 – the Quakers fell, 5-4, in their only series loss.
