Men's Squash Fends Off Feisty Williams, 8-1, for Fifth Place

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Although the final score was 8-1, that did not indicate how close things actually were in Penn’s win over Williams for fifth place at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Championships. Six matches went to five games with the Quakers winning four of those.

Graham Bassett and Christopher Thompson both had thrilling come from behind wins. Bassett fell behind 2-0 to Eric Buchsbaum, but fought back to win; 9-7, 9-3 and 9-4. Thompson also trailed 2-0 before he won his final three games.

Ben Ende bounced back from a 9-4 loss in Game 1 to win Games 2, 3 and 5. Ryan Rayfield lost a tough Game 1, 10-8. He answered back with a shutout in the next game and then won Games 4 and 5, 9-3.

Lee Rosen and Spencer Kurn were the only Penn players who played five game matches to win their first game. Not to discount their victories, but Gilly Lane and Mark Froot arguably had the easiest wins for Penn, winning in three games.

This concludes the Quakers season and it marks their best finish under head coach Craig Thorpe-Clark. Starting Friday select Penn players will compete in the CSA Individual Championships at Ringe Courts. Those draws will be announced during the week.
