Men's Squash Fights Past Franklin & Marshall, 8-1

PHILADELPHIA - The No. 6 University of Pennsylvania men's squash team fought through some tough matches in the middle positions but overcame No. 15 Franklin & Marshall, 8-1, Tuesday evening at Ringe Courts.

The Quakers (3-2, 2-1 Ivy) won for the second straight match while the Diplomats (3-4) dropped their fourth straight after playing four top-10 Ivy League teams in a row.

"I was impressed with the depth of F&M and they're certainly capable right down the line-up," said Head Coach Craig Thorpe-Clark.

Theevening was highlighted by matches with severalQuakers playing above their normal positions, includingSam Peelle's gritty five-set win at No. 8, where he defeated Shane Slater, 3-2 (9-2, 7-9, 9-4, 3-9, 9-5). Colby Emerson cruised to a 3-0 (9-4, 9-0, 9-6) win at No. 7, while Graham Bassett and Bobby Dickey each won at Nos. 5 and 6. Bassett was a 3-0 (9-0, 9-6, 9-4) winner while Dickey earned his first collegiate victory with a 3-0 (9-1, 9-0, 9-5) win. Rahil Shah was also a victor at No. 9, winning 3-0 (9-5, 9-2, 9-0).

"That shows the depth of the squad," Thorpe-Clark said. "We have kids who are committed to the program, who show up every day and work hard."

Gilly Lane and Lee Rosen took a pair of entertaining center court battles at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, with Lane winning 3-0 (9-2, 9-5, 9-1) and Rosen taking his match 3-0 (9-7, 9-4, 9-2). Jacob Himmelrich won 3-0 (10-9, 9-2, 9-3) at No. 3, while Andrew Zimmerman couldn't hold on at No. 4, falling to Ry Hawley 1-3 (7-9, 9-3, 5-9, 4-9).

The Quakers now take a month-long break before travelling to Navy on Jan. 11.
