Men's Squash Gets First Ivy Win, 7-2 over Brown

PHILADELPHIA - Men's squash ended its four-match losing streak with a 7-2 win Saturday afternoon at the Ringe Squash Courts. The Quakers (4-5, 1-3 Ivy) took down five of the matches in sweeps, while tacking on a pair of four-game wins. With the Quaker in attendance, the men's team jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first wave of matches passed through and never looked back en route to their first Ivy League win of the season.

Freshmen Oscar Mattsson and Michael Mutscheller got Penn off to a quick start with each making quick work of their opponents in three-game wins. Mattsson allowed just two points in the first game and five in the second before closing his win at No. 8 out with an 11-9 win. This was the highest-ranked match the younger Mattsson has played during his freshman season. He is now 2-0 in matches played in the top-nine.

Mutscheller picked up his team-high fifth win of the season at No. 5, his highest-ranked match so far this season. He used 11-8 wins in the first and third to go along with an 11-7 win in the second.

Derek Chilvers added the third win for Penn with his four-game win at No. 4, also a career-high ranking. Chilvers forced a tiebreak in the first game before falling, 15-13, but rallied with an 11-4 second game win to tie it. He then took the match with hard-fought 12-10 and 11-9 victories. The Bears would get their first win of day at No. 2. For Daniel Judd, his match was the first of his career at No. 2.

Justin Ang and Jack Maine would then clinch the match early with two more 3-0 wins for the hosts. Ang jumped up 2-0 early with a pair of 11-9 wins and closed his match at No. 5 out with his most convincing game, 11-4. This was the sophomore's first career match at No. 4. He now improves to 4-5 this season. Maine won 11-7 and 11-9 before closing his win at No. 7 with an 11-5 win. He now moves to 4-3 in his freshman campaign.

Trevor McGuinness got back on the winning side of his matches with a four-game win at No. 3. He jumped out to 2-0 lead, taking a tiebreak in the first game, followed by an 11-7 win in the second. After dropping the third game, he rebounded with another 11-7 win to seal his third victory of the season. Thomas Mattsson improved to 5-4 this season with his win at No. 1. The senior co-captain just continued to get better as the match went along, winning 11-8, 11-6, 11-5.

Brown would pick up its second win of the day at No. 9. Hunter Schlacks found himself down a game early, after dropping a tight first game, 11-9. However, he would reverse that score in the second game, tying his match at one-all. He took a 2-1 lead with an 11-7 win in his third game, but his opponent took the fourth and fifth games for Brown's second win of the day.

With the first Ivy League win of the season under their belts, the Quakers will now prepare for No. 1 Yale. The Bulldogs have yet to be beaten this season. That match will get underway tomorrow at noon and be played alongside the women's match.
