Update: With individuals dropping out of the CSA individual championships, freshman Hayes Murphy has moved into the top-flight playing for thePool Trophy, while junior Augie Frank has moved off the wait list into play for the Molloy Cup.
PHILADELPHIA – The College Squash Association Individual Championships begins this Friday at Princeton, and the University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team will send five individuals to compete in the three-day event.
Playing in the top-flight of individuals – ranked No. 1-32 – and for the Pool Trophy will be freshmen Marwan Mahmoud and Derek Hsue. Mahmoud finished the season ranked No. 7 nationally as an individual, after compiling a 13-4 record playing in the No. 1 position for the Quakers. Hsue ranked No. 25 as an individual, and finished with a 8-9 record in the second position for Penn.
Three other Penn freshmen qualified for the Molloy Cup – individuals ranked No. 33-80 – Hayes Murphy, Anders Larson, and James Watson.
Murphy finished with an 11-6 record playing primarily at No. 3 for the Quakers and is ranked No. 33 nationally. Larson is ranked 43rd nationally and finished with an 8-8 record in the fourth and fifth position for Penn. Watson posted a 12-5 record during the year, playing four, five, and six, and is ranked No. 44 in the country.
Two other Quakers are on the wait list for the individual championships, in case an individual drops out. Those players are junior Augie Frank and sophomore Rahil Fazelbhoy. Frank finished with an 11-6 record in the fifth through eighth positions, while Fazelbhoy was 8-7 playing in the sixth, seventh, and eight positions on the ladder.
